An all-Muslim city council in Michigan banned Pride flags on city properties in a vote that proponents defended as protecting religious freedom but critics blasted as blatant discrimination. The Hamtramck City Council voted unanimously after three hours of raucous debate Tuesday evening to prohibit the display of LGBTQ+ flags, as well as banners with racist and political views, the
Detroit Free Press reported. Before the vote, Mayor Pro Tem Mohammed Hassan, who introduced the measure, lashed out at critics for not respecting the views of residents. "You guys are the ones making problems," not us, Hassan said, according to the newspaper. "Please don't threaten us. ... I'm the elected official. ... I'm working for the people, what the majority of the people like."
