The Airbus was routed Recife (Brazil) to Madrid (Spain), and the Boeing Madrid (Spain) to Sao Paulo (Brazil). Both were at FL360. Oceanic airspace lies beyond the reach of ground-based radar, air traffic control relies on procedural separation and satellite tracking rather than direct visual or radar monitoring
Both aircraft had been cleared to maintain FL360 when TCAS Traffic collision avoidance alerted pilots and the A321 descended and the B787 climbed. The computers on both aircraft communicate directly to coordinate opposite maneuvers.
TCAS cannot always physically take control of the aircraft's flight controls. Instead, it alerts the pilots with a Resolution Advisory (RA) (e.g., "Climb" or "Descend"). The pilots are then required to disconnect the autopilot and manually maneuver the aircraft out of the danger zone
Pilots are rigorously trained to follow TCAS RAs immediately, even if those instructions directly contradict orders from ground-based ATC
We were able to find on flightradar 24 the point of the incident where the A321 descended at 1024 feet per minute to avoid collision.
Flight tracking apps like Flightradar24 rely on line-of-sight signals (ADS-B and MLAT) rather than actual radar. Their main limitations include coverage blind spots over oceans, delayed or missing data for older aircraft, deliberate tracking blocks by military/VIP flights, and occasional signal errors that can make flights appear to jump or detour)
