New euro user Slovenia "bad example" - EU monetary chief
Brussels (dpa) - Slovenia, the former Yugoslav state which became the first new EU member to introduce the euro this year,
is setting a bad example to other euro candidates by failing to control inflation , the EU's top monetary official said Friday.
"I'm deeply concerned about the evolution in Slovenia... This is a very bad signal sent to the candidates to join the euro area," EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said.
Countries wishing to use the EU single currency have to keep their inflation closely in line with that of countries already using it.
Slovenia became the first of the 10 states which joined the EU in 2004 to adopt the currency at the beginning of this year - partly by managing to keep its inflation to 2.5 per cent in 2005 and 2006. At the time, it was hailed as a model of financial stability.
But EU figures released on Friday forecast that the euro "Wunderkind" will post inflation figures of 3.5 per cent this year and 3.7 per cent next year -
numbers which would keep it firmly out of the eurozone if it had not already joined.
Mislim da je dovolj jasno kaj, kako in zakaj. Pa tudi krivec je jasno identificiran.
