Elon Musk owns shares in several companies, primarily those he has founded or significantly influenced. Based on the most current and reliable information, here are the companies in which he holds ownership stakes:
  1. Tesla, Inc.
    • Musk is the largest individual shareholder of Tesla, a publicly traded electric vehicle and clean energy company. As of recent estimates, he owns approximately 12-13% of Tesla’s shares, though this excludes stock options that could increase his stake if exercised. His ownership is a significant portion of his wealth, valued in the tens of billions depending on the stock price.
  2. SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corp.)
    • Musk founded SpaceX in 2002 and owns an estimated 42% of the company’s equity, with 79% voting control. This private aerospace company, valued at $350 billion as of December 2024, is a cornerstone of his portfolio and includes the Starlink satellite internet subsidiary.
  3. X Corp (formerly Twitter)
    • Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022 for $44 billion and rebranded it as X. As the sole owner of this private company, he effectively holds 100% of its shares, though its valuation has dropped significantly, estimated at $19 billion in October 2023 and as low as $9.4 billion per some analyses in 2024.
  4. xAI
    • Founded by Musk in 2023, xAI is an artificial intelligence company where he holds an estimated 54% stake. Private investors valued it at $50 billion in November 2024, reflecting its rapid growth and funding rounds.
  5. Neuralink Corp.
    • Musk co-founded Neuralink in 2016 and is the majority owner of this neurotechnology company. Exact ownership percentages are less clear, but it’s estimated he holds a significant majority stake, with the company valued in the low billions as of 2024.
  6. The Boring Company
    • Musk founded The Boring Company in 2016 and owns over 90% of its shares, with SpaceX holding a 6% stake and early employees owning small portions. Its valuation was estimated at over $7 billion in October 2023.
Additional Notes:
  • SolarCity: Musk was involved in its conceptualization and held shares before Tesla acquired it in 2016 for $2.6 billion. His ownership is now part of his Tesla stake, as SolarCity is a subsidiary of Tesla.
  • Past Ventures: Musk no longer owns shares in companies he once founded or co-founded, such as Zip2 (sold to Compaq for $307 million in 1999), PayPal (sold to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002 as part of X.com), or OpenAI (where he resigned from the board in 2018 and holds no equity).
These ownership stakes reflect Musk’s focus on innovative technology sectors like automotive, aerospace, AI, and infrastructure. His shares in private companies (SpaceX, X, xAI, Neuralink, and The Boring Company) are not publicly traded, while Tesla is his only major publicly traded holding. Valuations and ownership percentages can fluctuate based on funding rounds, stock performance, and private sales, but this list captures his current portfolio as of March 21, 2025.
