Several people have reportedly been killed in a shooting at the headquarters of
Russia’s security agency.
According to unconfirmed reports carried by RT, a Kremlin-backed channel, a group of three gunmen fired automatic rounds as they approached security officers in the lobby of the building shortly after 6pm local time. Those reports suggest two of the gunmen were killed, but one ran out onto the street, and then continued to exchange fire with officers.
A spokesman for the security agency confirmed that a gunman was intercepted and killed, provisionally describing the attack as "an act of terrorism."
Video footage released by Baza, a social media account with close links to the police,
shows a gunman taking cover behind the columns of the building immediately behind the main headquarters, and shooting in the direction its windows. It also shows a traffic policeman lying on the floor.
Another social media account associated with Russian authorities, 112, reported that three presidential security officers were killed in the exchange of fire. A third account, Mash, reported a traffic policeman had died.
Social media footage depicts civilians fleeing the scene in a state of panic, with drivers abandoning their cars and running for their lives.
Special forces are immediately deployed in what authorities are now calling a terrorist incident
