Problem:
While copying files with a size larger than 4GB to the device, Windows® reports "Disk full".
This message can be confusing, because it appears even if there is still enough room on the STORAGEBIRD device.
Reason/Cause:
In order to maintain maximum compatibility with all possible operating systems and usage scenarios that the customer may utilize, the STORAGEBIRD USB based external harddisks are pre-formatted with the FAT 32 file system. This file system does not support files bigger than 4GB.
Files > 4GB may occure for example as DVD image files, digital recordings from TV or other sources.
Solution:
Under Windows XP / VISTA please go to the "Help and support center" and search for
Convert NTFS
From the list of answers pick a task
"Convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt"
Follow the instructions.
In particular under Windows XP, assuming that the STORAGEBIRD device is under drive letter K:
Open a Command Prompt window
Enter the command
Vol K:
to get the volume name and write the name down.
Enter the command
Convert K: /FS:NTFS
During the execution of this command, the volume name should be given as a confirmation. The STORAGEBIRD device filesystem will be converted to NTFS without data loss.
However, it is advised to make a data backup of the STORAGEBIRD data before executing the above procedure.
