Statement by the DGKH
FFP2 masks must become more secure -and are not an option for the population
The DGKH spoke out very early (January and March 2020) in favor of the use of masks in public (DGKH 2020a, 2020b, 2020c): “Every mask is better than no mask”. This was in accordance with the RKI's 2017 pandemic plan, in which masks were rated positively
became.
As a result, the DGKH expressed its criticism of the FFP2 masks and their use outside of the healthcare system by laypeople. Tightly fitting FFP2 masks (and that's the point) require increased work of breathing, which older fellow citizens, but also people with respiratory diseases, cannot do. The lack of choice for a mask adapted to the face, the lack of training on how to wear it correctly and the lack of fit tests speak against any recommendation for wearing FFP2 masks outside of the healthcare sector. This must lead to the masks being worn leaky and therefore offering no protection whatsoever (Jatzwauk et al. 2021).
Accordingly, the DGKH has issued critical statements on the FFP2 mask wearing requirement in public (DGKH 2021a, 2021b), which was introduced in Bavaria and Berlin. Currently the
DGKH called for the destruction of the FFP2 masks, which were approved in a shortened procedure and which are to be brought into the "National Health Protection Reserve".
There are good reasons for this:
