A Powerful & Deliberate Spectacle
Public execution in medieval and early modern city was never simply about punishment. It was a carefully choreographed display of power, authority and social control. In a city where most could not read, laws were proclaimed aloud and the scaffold served as a living warning - a visceral lesson in what happened to those who challenged the crown, the kirk, or the social order. Justice had to be seen to be believed, and the larger the crowd, the more effective the message.
