September 19, 2024, at Arizona State University's West Valley campus. Kaci Sloan, a 19-year-old student, allegedly stabbed her classmate, Mara Daffron, in a seemingly random attack. According to reports, Sloan attacked Daffron as she entered a classroom, stabbing her multiple times "without provocation or any words spoken."

Witnesses, including students and a professor, intervened, restraining Sloan and disarming her. Daffron was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and underwent surgery. During her interrogation, Sloan admitted that she had planned to "hurt somebody" and had chosen Daffron as she believed she was an "easier target" than another individual she had considered attacking. Sloan is currently in custody with a bail set at $250,000 and is facing charges, including first-degree attempted murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
