Three engines are available – a 99bhp 1.4-litre petrol version or 140bhp 1.8-litre i-VTEC variant as well as a 148bhp 2.2 i-DTEC diesel – with four equipment levels to choose from.

Entry-level SE trim costs from £16,495 and includes 16-inch alloys, air-conditioning and USB and MP3. For a £1500 premium (£17,995) the SE car is mated to the more powerful 1.8-litre petrol engine. Prices for the diesel start from £20,095 in SE guise.

Higher up the spec list, ES adds cruise control, rear-view parking camera and keyfob-operated windows and door mirrors. Available from £18,995, ES trim is available with the 1.8-litre petrol engine and more expensive 2.2-litre diesel, which costs from £21,095.

For both SE and ES models, an extra £995 buys a T-grade package, which adds satellite-navigation.

EX trim is the third of the four trims and includes heated leather seats, sat-nav and a premium audio system. Prices for the 1.8-litre car start from £21,745, rising to £23,845 for the diesel.

Honda’s flagship Civic is the EX GT. Priced from £24,495 and £26,595 respectively, EX GT features smart (keyless) entry/ignition, front and rear parking sensors and bi-xenon headlights. Also included over EX trim is a panoramic glass roof, 17-inch alloys and tinted windows.

For a £1900 premium, EX GT also gets Honda’s Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Mitigation Braking System – a first for the civic range.

All models come with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, with an automatic ’box available for an added £1385 on 1.8-litre petrol models.

Stop-start is also standard on manual models as well as an Econ switch, which “adopts specific settings to improve fuel consumption,” according to Honda.

Also standard across the board is Honda’s Intelligent Multi-Information Display - a five-inch dashboard screen which displays mpg, the idle stop status and climate and audio settings.
