The European Union's emergency plan to combat a potential kerosene shortage resulting from the war with Iran appears to be taking shape. Reuters news agency has obtained a draft of a concept for securing kerosene supplies, which is scheduled for release on April 22.
As Reuters reports, the plan is to assess refinery capacities in Europe and ensure their full utilization. Further measures are in the works, sources familiar with the plans told the news agency.
The industry association Airlines for Europe had proposed joint purchasing in addition to EU-wide monitoring of stockpiles. European airlines had warned of kerosene shortages within weeks if supplies from the Middle East remained blocked. This could significantly disrupt travel before the summer.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Europe imports 30 percent of its aviation fuel needs. Around 75 percent of these imports come from the Middle East. Refinery capacity in Europe has decreased in recent years. Many European refineries are already operating at near full capacity. Furthermore, fuel supply in Europe is highly uneven.
