Vseskozi sem mislil, da se imenuje po Amerigu Vespucciju, potem pa naletim na tole.

Citat:
Richard ap Meryk, Anglicised to Richard Amerike (or Ameryk) (c. 1445–1503) was a wealthy English merchant, royal customs officer and sheriff, of Welsh descent.[1] He was the principal owner of the Matthew, the ship sailed by John Cabot during his voyage of exploration to North America in 1497.[1] A Bristolian scholar and amateur historian, Alfred Hudd, suggested in 1908 that the continental name America was derived from Amerike's surname due to his sponsorship of Cabot's expedition to Newfoundland and was used on early British maps that have since been lost.

Citat:
However, Jules Marcou, a prominent French geologist who while studying North America argued, as did other 19th-century writers, that Vespucci changed his Christian name from Alberico to Amerigo after his discovery. Indeed, the only records of Vespucci's full name were created a few years before his death, long after his voyage.

"When Christopher Columbus, sailing for the king and queen of Spain in the 1490s, explored what today is known as the West Indies, the central American coast, and the northern coast of South America, the existing European world view began to change in dramatic and sometimes unpredictable ways. Other explorers followed including Amerigo Vespucci, who identified these lands as a separate continent, not as islands or peninsulas attached to eastern Asia. Utilizing Vespucci's travel accounts, German geographer Martin Waldseemüller depicted this new continent on a large world map in 1507, naming it “America” in Vespucci's honor"

Tudi to je iz strani loc.gov. Verjetno so na tej strani res sami nepreverjeni viri:)

V čem se Wikipedia moti?

Citat:
This is not the consensus view of how America was named, but has been repeated as a form of historical revisionism. The consensus view is that America is the namesake of Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian explorer and cartographer.

Se strinjam, članek je čisto ok... Nikjer ne trdi, da je to fakt.

Sicer pa glede imena Amerike je tole dobro branje:
http://books.google.si/books?i...p;q&f=false

Ta Amerigo je bil v glavnem nek nepomembnež, ki je iz Španije domov v Italijo pisal o svojih velikih odkritjih in potovanjih, no resnica je pa bila vsaj malo drugačna...
